View Full Version : Fraternal AND Identical?

I have a set of fraternal twins already. It runs in my family. I am now pregnant with twin girls, and each time I have a sonogram, they say there are indications that they are identical. What I have read says that identical twins are not genetic, but just a fluke that happens sometimes. We are having a difficult time believing that we could have both fraternal and identical twins. It seems highly unlikely.
Does anyone else have a set of both fraternal and identical? If so, what was different about parenting identical twins? Our fraternal set are b/g. The set on the way are g/g. I expect it will be different to parent same sex twins either way, but what is different about parenting identical twins vs. fraternal, if anything?
Any comments or suggestions are welcome...
Thanks!

Congratulations to you on having a second set of twins. I only have one set of fraternal twin girls who are almost 15 mos old now, but I wanted to share a little of your excitement with you. It is super special to have a set of twins in the household, watching them develop their own little personalities and have a best friend built right into their lives. I'd imagine with identical twins, that things might be a little trickier with individualizing each child, since they both technically share the same DNA, and will look so much alike potentially. However, identical or fraternal, each child is an individual and it is so wonderful to watch them develop into their own little person. Best of luck to you, and again, hope you didn't mind me sharing this special moment in your life with you.

I have 5 year old identical girls and 2 year old b/g frats! I have found that my identicals are much closer to each other than my frats. Of course the frats are only 2, but the other twins were still much closer at this age. Now they either have the same toys or they share everything. They even share the clothes they wear. With the frats, one is more interested in trucks and the other is more interested in dolls and stuffed animals and of course they do not share clothes. My identical twins seem to stick together more often and cause more trouble than my frats do.

My id boys were #2 & #3 followed by another singleton. When I got pg this last time I was sure it would not be twins since the boys are id and there are none in the family. I now have G/B twins who just turned four months old. I am 34 so I think my age may have had something to do with it.
Congratulations on the new babies.

I have two sets of twins. My older girls are 9 years old and they are identical. My baby girls are 6 months old and they are fraternal. We were very surprised the first time to find out we were having twins because as far as my husband and I knew there were no twins in either of our families. But, lo and behold, once we told our families we found out there were twins in the family. After I had my older girls I had distant cousins on my mother's side and on my father's side who each had twins. So twins are on both sides of my family.
Both sets of my twins are miracles of modern medical science. I have PCOS so it was very difficult for me to conceive. My identical twins are the result of IUI and my fraternal twins are the result of IVF.
My husband and I feel very blessed to be the parents of four beautiful girls. I am sure it will be interesting to see how the relationships of identicals and same sex fraternals differ.
As parents of multiples I'm sure you know how people out there always comment when they see the TWIN stroller. What we think is more funny is when they see the Twin Stroller and then look up and see another set of twins pushing the stroller. As you can imagine we get all kinds of interesting comments. Our favorite reply is that we are just more efficient than most people. We have our children two at a time instead of just having a single baby.

Congrats on the pregnancy! You must be thrilled! My frat g/g's are 6 months and thus far seem super close. I can't wait to hear how close these twins are compared to your others.
Congrats to TJAbdo, roadtripmommy, and doubletwins. You ladies are truely special to have such wonderful blessings!

CONGRATS! I have a 9 yr old daughter, I have a 6 yr old Fraternal set Boy/Girl (runs in the family, sis has a set) THEN I have 22 month old identical boys!
It's neat seeing both types of twins grow up.
Good Luck!
